Puerto Maldonado is a small jungle town in the south of Peru, close to the Bolivian and Brazilian borders.
No one knows exactly why Machu Picchu was built at the height of the Incan Empire. It is known that the Spaniards never made it this far, because it's still standing. The only remains found were those of women and children, so one theory are that this is a sanctuary where women and children were sent when the men were off fighting.
Today, Puno is the capital of folkloric Peru. The city is most known for the Fiesta de la Virgen de la Candelaria, Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, and Uros Island. It is often said that the city's name, Arequipa, comes from the Quechua phrase "Ari, quepay".
The Nazca lines are a series of geoglyphs inscribed into the Nazca Desert of Peru. Here you will be able to see many figures spread across 500 square kilometres.
